The producers:
A small community of farmers in Bulaago on the slopes a Mt Elgon, Uganda. The price of the coffee includes a premium for social development in the area such as funding for clean water schemes.
The process
The hand-picked cherries are placed in a water tank. Any low quality low density cherries float to the surface and are removed. The cherries are pulped and immediately laid out on shaded raised beds to dry.
The region
The slopes of Mount Elgon, straddling the border between Uganda and Kenya, are renowned for producing some of the finest Arabica coffee in East Africa. This region’s high altitude, volcanic soils, and temperate climate create ideal conditions for cultivating coffee with unique flavor profiles. Smallholder farmers dominate coffee production here, often intercropping coffee plants with bananas and other crops for sustainability. The coffee grown on Mount Elgon is celebrated for its bright acidity, fruity and floral notes, and smooth body. Many farmers are organized into cooperatives, which not only help improve production techniques but also enable access to fair trade markets, contributing to the socio-economic development of local communities. Harvesting is typically done by hand, ensuring only the ripest cherries are picked, further enhancing the quality of the coffee.
