Rich, Fruity Ugandan Espresso from the Slopes of Mount Elgon

Especially roasted for espresso machines, this natural-processed lot from the Bulaago farming community on Mount Elgon, Eastern Uganda uses a longer roast time to reduce acidity and build sweetness — bringing out the marmalade and strawberry character of this high-altitude Arabica in concentrated espresso form.

Sourced via Zukuka Bora Coffee Company, a social enterprise whose purchase premiums directly fund community development across the Mt Elgon region through their partner NGO, JENGA Community Development.

Ideal if you enjoy:

  • Fruit-forward espresso with natural sweetness
  • Something more interesting than a typical chocolatey espresso blend
  • A coffee with genuine community impact behind it

Taste Profile

Sweetness: ●●●●○
Body: ●●●●○
Acidity: ●●○○○

A rich, sweet shot with marmalade and strawberry at the core and a smooth, fruity finish. Fuller body than the filter version, with acidity tamed for espresso extraction.

How to Brew

Best methods: Espresso machine, moka pot, bean-to-cup
Water temperature: 92–94°C
Ratio: Start at 1:2 (e.g. 18g in, 36g out) and adjust to taste
Milk drinks: The marmalade and strawberry notes carry well through milk — works nicely as a flat white or latte for those who enjoy fruit-forward espresso
Moka pot tip: Use off-boil water in the base chamber and a medium-fine grind to avoid bitterness

Why This Coffee Stands Out

  • High-altitude volcanic terroir — 1,900–2,100 masl on the slopes of Mount Elgon
  • Natural process — fruit sweetness built in at source, not through roasting
  • Community premium built into the price — every purchase contributes to social development in Bulaago
  • SL28 and SL34 varieties — the same celebrated varieties behind Kenya's finest coffees
  • Roasted longer specifically for espresso — acidity reduced, sweetness increased
  • Roasted to order — fresh and dispatched promptly

The Process

After selective hand picking, ripe cherries are floated in water to remove any low-density or defective fruit. The cherries are then laid out whole on raised drying beds and dried naturally in the sun — allowing the fruit to slowly dry around the bean, building the marmalade and strawberry sweetness this lot is known for. Once dried to the correct moisture level the outer fruit is removed and the beans are rested before milling and export.

About Zukuka Bora & JENGA Community Development

Zukuka Bora Coffee Company works with the smallholder farming community in Bulaago on the slopes of Mount Elgon, Eastern Uganda. The name means "produce well" in Swahili — and the project's model is built around exactly that: paying farmers fairly for quality cherry, then reinvesting a dedicated premium into the community.

Their partner NGO, JENGA Community Development, has been working in the Mt Elgon area for nearly 20 years, running projects covering education sponsorship, clean water schemes, savings groups, health promotion and wider farming support. Arabica coffee has been grown in this micro-region since around 1920, when the first seeds were brought from neighbouring Kenya — making it one of the oldest Arabica-growing communities in Uganda.

Who This Coffee Is (and Isn't) For

Perfect for:

  • Espresso drinkers who enjoy fruit-forward, naturally sweet shots
  • Flat white and latte lovers who want something more interesting than a standard blend
  • Anyone who wants to support a coffee with genuine community impact built in

Not ideal if:

  • You prefer a classic dark, chocolatey espresso (try our Brazil Eagle Monte espresso instead)
  • You mainly brew filter (see our Uganda Bulaago filter roast instead)

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Uganda Bulaago espresso taste like?
Marmalade and strawberry with a smooth, fruity sweetness and a fuller body than the filter version — a fruit-forward shot rather than a classic chocolatey espresso.

How is this different from the filter roast?
The espresso roast uses a longer roast time to reduce acidity and build sweetness, making it suited to espresso extraction while keeping the marmalade and strawberry character intact.

Is this good for milk-based drinks?
Yes — the fruit notes carry well through milk, making it a good choice for flat whites and lattes if you enjoy fruit-forward espresso. For a more traditional chocolatey milk drink, our Brazil Eagle Monte espresso is a better fit.

What is Zukuka Bora?
A social enterprise working with smallholder farmers on Mount Elgon, Uganda. Every purchase includes a dedicated community premium, channelled through their partner NGO JENGA into local development projects.

What does natural process mean?
The whole cherry is dried in the sun with the fruit still intact around the bean, allowing natural sugars from the fruit to infuse the bean and build the fruity, sweet character this coffee delivers as an espresso.

What grind options are available?
Whole bean, or pre-ground for espresso machine — select at checkout.

How fresh is it?
Roasted to order and dispatched promptly.

Is there a filter roast version?
Yes — see our Uganda Bulaago Natural Filter Roast.
